Religious Freedom... is this backwards or what?

Children CAN pray in schools. There is nothing to stop them from engaging in personal prayer so long as it does not interfere with the learning environment. School officials, acting in a government employee capacity just cannot mandate, nor lead children in prayer as that would be an endorsement of a religion by the government.
